Casas targeted a July 2 return to action, but that doesn’t appear likely according to Cora’s latest update.
Triston Casas is nearing a return to the lineup, but he’s still not there yet, according to Alex Cora’s latest update Saturday.
The Red Sox manager spoke highly of Casas’s rehab progress, but noted that he’s still dry swinging. Less than two weeks ago, Casas revealed his internal target date to return was July 2, which is this Tuesday. But, considering he isn’t taking live batting practice, it seems he won’t be ready by then.
“He obviously has general soreness. I think he’s going to do his stuff inside,” Cora said of Casas following his swing session Saturday. “I’m not sure if he’s going to go on the field, but he feels that it went OK with the swings. It was up to 30 if I’m not mistaken. We’ll see where we’re at tomorrow. He’s swinging again tomorrow.”
Casas has been on the shelf for over two months. He suffered a cartilage tear in his ribcage on April 20 and has yet to fully recover. Rib cartilage injuries can vary in recovery time due to limited blood flow to the ribcage.
It remains unclear exactly when Casas will be able to return to the Red Sox. His logical next step in rehab would be taking live batting practice. Casas did note earlier in the week that he’s taken “thousands of at-bats” in his head to help visualize and keep himself sharp for when his time comes.
Cora also gave an update on another infielder, Vaughn Grissom, who’s been out of the lineup since the beginning of June after re-aggravating a hamstring injury.
With Grissom, Cora noted that he hasn’t played very much baseball in 2024, and that is contributing to his extended absence.
“He didn’t have spring training. He had the rehab assignment. He got sick. He gets hurt here,” Cora said. “We have to make sure, first things first, that he’s stronger, and then after that we map it out.”
By the sound of it, Grissom isn’t too close to taking the field again. And when he does, it’ll likely be a few games in Worcester before he’s called upon again in Boston.
