Thousands remain without power following tri-state thunderstorms

Thousands throughout the tri-state area remained without power Friday afternoon following intense thunderstorms Wednesday night.

More than 1,000 people in New York State were still in the dark as of 2 p.m. after Gov. Hochul said Thursday morning that electricity had been restored to 90,000 New Yorkers.

“Utility emergency crews are hard at work to restore power as soon as possible,” she said, urging citizens still without energy to reach out to their service provider.

Nearly 6,000 New Jersey residents also found themselves still without electricity Friday afternoon, according to PowerOutage.us. The northwest counties of Warren and Hunterdon bore the brunt of those service issues.

In Connecticut, more than 1,300 people were still without power as of 2 p.m. Friday. Most of those outages were in the northwest county of Litchfield.

Storms throughout the area moved in Wednesday night, bringing gusting winds around 60 mph. Those overnight winds were accompanied by lighting and thunder.

Downed trees and power lines were reported in New York and New Jersey. In East Orange, officials blamed a fallen tree for killing a 30-year-old father of three.

Dry weather is expected for New York City until possible thunderstorms return Sunday morning.
