NYC ends heat emergency, but 90-degree temperatures are forecast later this week

US

New York City ended its official heat emergency on Monday, as temperatures cooled after an intense heat wave enshrouded the region over the past several days.

But they’re expected to climb again to above-normal levels starting on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service and city officials. That rise in temperatures and humidity could be followed by showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning.

NWS meteorologist James Tomasini said that although the forecast calls for a “drier” climate on Monday afternoon, Tuesday and Wednesday will likely record temperatures in the low- to mid-90s. Temperatures are anticipated to drop again on Friday, when conditions could also be dry.

Tomasini said the heat wave that started last week is over because temperatures no longer exceed 90 degrees for three or more consecutive days. But there’s still a “greater chance of it being above-normal temperatures” for the rest of the summer, he added.

City officials deactivated the heat emergency plan that was put in place last week but they will continue to monitor conditions and respond to any impacts from the heat wave, Emergency Management spokesperson Aries Dela Cruz said on X.

Eligible New Yorkers can apply for assistance to buy and install air conditioners through the Home Energy Assistance Program, which generally covers ACs valued at $800 or less including installation on a first-come, first-served basis.
