Boston’s heat on Wednesday was a record-setter

The city broke the record for June 19, set in 1923.

Boston broke a 101-year-old heat record on Wednesday, as scorching temperatures and humidity continue to blanket the region.

The previous heat record for June 19 — 96 degrees — was set in 1923, according to the National Weather Service. On Wednesday, a preliminary high of 98 degrees was recorded at Boston Logan Airport, according to Torry Dooley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Boston.

And the city can expect another day of heat and humidity for Thursday.

“Expect more in the way of showers and thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon,” Dooley said.

The meteorologist said that depending on when they develop, the showers and thunderstorms could limit the amount of heating that occurs on Thursday. If they start early in the afternoon, Dooley said it might limit how warm the day becomes.

The exact timing of the storms and their impact remain a forecasting challenge, he said.

The service is forecasting that a cold front will move in on Friday, bringing cooler temperatures and the potential for showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon just in time for the Celtics victory parade.
