Labrador’s Reaction to Owner Saying ‘Popcorn’ Has Internet in Stitches

US

One dog has amused the internet with her reaction to hearing the name of her favorite snack food.

Treats are a great way to reward dogs for good behavior and for reaching training milestones. Though owners may be unsure how to treat their pooches without overdoing it, the Kennel Club in the U.K. lists several healthy snacks, including lean meat, small amounts of kibble, pumpkin, apple, carrots, broccoli and green beans.

In a TikTok video, Poppy, a black Labrador, jolts with excitement when her owner mentions one particular snack: popcorn.

“Watch my dog’s reaction when we say the word popcorn,” the owner wrote in text overlay, adding in the video’s caption, “Popcorn lover over here.”

The video, which has received more than 550,000 views and 110,000 likes on TikTok, was posted by user @theblacklabrador_poppy on June 6.

In the comments section, viewers joked about Poppy’s reaction, with one writing, “His whole world stopped when you said popcorn.”

Newsweek has contacted @theblacklabrador_poppy for comment via Instagram and email. We could not verify the details of the case.

The video begins with Poppy lying in bed chewing on a bone toy. When her owner says, “Should we get popcorn?” the Labrador freezes mid-bite, her eyes grow wide, and she turns to face her owner.

“Popcorn?” the owner repeats, and Poppy rushes toward her owner and wags her tail uncontrollably.

According to the American Kennel Club, plain and air-popped popcorn is safe for dogs in small quantities, but flavored variants should be avoided—such as buttered, salted or sweet popcorn.

When treating a dog, owners should consider the 10 percent rule: Snacks should account for no more than 10 percent of a dog’s daily calorie intake.

If a dog’s daily calorie intake is 1,050, then its snacks should account for no more than 105 calories.

A dog’s food bag should indicate how many calories are in it and advise on a daily calorie intake. If unsure, owners can seek veterinarian advice on how much they should be feeding their hounds.

Generally, dogs have three cups of kibble per day. To ensure snacks do not take their dogs over their daily calorie allowance, owners should subtract a few kibbles if their dogs are indulging in snacks with higher calorific content.

On TikTok, viewers commented on Poppy’s snack of choice and discussed their own pups’ favorites.

“My dog LOVES popcorn,” one user wrote.

Another commented: “We used to have [to] call it PC when our Italian Greyhound was alive. She went mental when she [heard] popcorn.”
