Country superstar George Strait set a record for the largest ticketed concert in U.S. history when nearly 111,000 fans packed into Kyle Field at Texas A&M to see the 72-year-old country star play.
“I’m ashamed to say this, but this is my first time to ever be in Kyle Field… damn!” he told 110,905 supporters in College Station on Saturday, according to Billboard. “Just invite me back I’ll come!”
The previous record was set in New Jersey in 1977 when 107,019 fans came to see the Grateful Dead in Raceway Park.
Strait, a Poteet, Texas, native, has been drawing big crowds for a long time. Nearly 109,000 fans filled into AT&T Stadium in Arlington when he wrapped up what was billed as his final tour in the Lone Star State in 2014.
According to Billboard, Strait has recorded more number one singles than any artist in any genre. He’s had 60 hits top the country music charts. His latest album, “Cowboys and Dreamers,” goes on sale in September.
“You just can’t describe it,” Strait said in a 2023 interview where he tried to explain how it feels to rock perform for his dedicated fanbase.
Strait was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006. His hit songs include “Amarillo by Morning,” “I Cross My Heart” and “Troubadour.”
