It’s nearing the end of the working week, so if your brain is working a bit slower than usual, we don’t blame you.

If this means you’re struggling with today’s Wordle, Newsweek is here to help you with a variety of tips and clues.

The daily word game was first invented in 2013 by New York-based software engineer Josh Wardle. He fine-tuned the game for his partner who loved word puzzles and wanted to give her something to keep her entertained during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After Wordle was released to the public in October 2021, it quickly became a viral sensation, with many players taking to social media each day to share their scores.

The word-based game exploded from 90 users on November 1, 2021, to 300,000 on January 2, 2022, according to figures by Statista. In January 2022, The New York Times purchased Wordle for an undisclosed low seven-figure sum, though the game remained free to play.

The puzzle’s premise is simple enough; players have to follow a color system to work out a five-letter word within six guesses. Green tiles show letters that are in the word and in the correct position. A yellow tile means the letter is in the word, but in the wrong place. A gray tile means that the letter is not in the word at all.

In an interview with Newsweek in January 2022, Wardle explained why he chose five-letter words and six guesses, calling it the “sweet spot.”

“There is a reason that every word is five letters long and that you are allowed six attempts to guess it,” he said. “That might seem arbitrary but, with the prototype version, I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries that players were allowed.

“Through that process of refinement, I figured out that five letters and six tries was the ideal sweet spot. It’s just limited enough to feel challenging and to make you think, but most of the time people still manage to solve it. So, you feel a real sense of real accomplishment.”
