Internet in Awe of Sweet Homemade Father’s Day Tradition To Last for Years

US

As Father’s Day approaches, one woman has decided to share her family’s tradition that has inspired many others on TikTok.

In a post that has racked up over 210,000 views, Dr. Ashley Top (@drashleytop) has shared an “ongoing card” that is decorated every year by her two children. The on-screen text explains that their dad can see how their drawings and writing improve year by year.

“It will stay altogether in a special black book,” she wrote. This heartwarming idea has received almost 9,000 likes and numerous comments from parents who intend to do the same.

Greeting cards are the most popular Father’s Day gift, according to a recent survey conducted by The National Retail Federation. The results found more than half (58 percent) of 8,580 participants intend on buying a card, followed by clothing (54 percent), a special outing (52 percent) and personal care items (31 percent).

So far, Top’s idea is filled with crayon drawings meaning it is a cheap yet extremely cheerful way to celebrate her husband. According to the survey conducted in May, 47 percent of consumers say it’s important to find a gift that is unique or different while others prioritize a gift that creates a special memory (39 percent).

It turns out Top, a dentist, isn’t the only person who does this. Another user said: “We each have a book in our family that we use instead of all cards. Birthday, Christmas, etc. it’s full of pictures, handprints, notes. So special!”

A second user said: “Off to buy a book tomorrow, it’s his 2nd Father’s Day but he was so little last year so wouldn’t have done it anyway.”

“Why didn’t I see this eight years ago,” wrote another user.

While a new pair of trainers or set of golf clubs may be appreciated, sentimental gifts are more valued in the long run. In fact, studies have shown that family traditions have major positive effects.

A study published in 2002 in the American Psychological Association’s Journal of Family Psychology highlights the significance of family routines and rituals. These practices are linked to higher marital satisfaction, stronger family relationships, children’s health, academic achievement and adolescents’ sense of identity.

The review of 32 studies identified common family routines such as dinnertime, bedtime, chores and everyday interactions like phone calls or visiting relatives. Common family rituals include birthdays, Christmas, family reunions and other holiday celebrations.

Additionally, writing notes and cards for a loved one each year can create cherished keepsakes for everyone to look back on in the future.
