A man was shot and seriously wounded while driving on Florida’s Turnpike late Monday night, according to police.
The shooting happened shortly before midnight in the northbound lanes of the highway right before the exit 9 off-ramp, said Detective Angel Rodriguez, a Miami-Dade County police spokesman.
The man was shot at least once. There was also a woman in the car, who was not injured, Rodriguez said.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took the man to Jackson South Medical Center’s trauma center in critical condition, Rodriguez said.
Police believe someone drove up alongside the car and opened fire before driving off. Officers have since taken one person into custody overnight, he said.
Rodriguez said the shooter and the victim knew each other.
According to Miami Herald news partner CBS Miami, the incident may be related to a shooting at a nearby apartment building.
Early Tuesday morning, the victim’s white sedan was parked on the embankment of the northbound lanes facing the highway near mile marker 8.
Police have not named the victim or person they have in custody as of Tuesday morning.
