East Boston carjackers get away with $240K in cash, police say

Police are looking for two people who allegedly impersonated police officers and stole nearly a quarter of a million in East Boston Friday morning.

A East Boston business owner withdrew $240,000 in cash from a bank in Fenway at 9 a.m. Friday, according to a police report. He then parked outside his business at 230 Meridian St. to talk to his daughter on the phone, police reported, before two men approached the car.

“I’ve been in business for 34 years. I’ve never had a problem,” the owner of the check cashing business told WCVB.   

The two men, wearing badges around their necks, banged on both front windows of his car, claimed they had a warrant, and told him to get out of his car, the report said. One of the men opened the car door, pushed the driver to the ground, and drove off with the other alleged robber.

“He opened the door, he grabbed me by the back of the neck and he threw me down to the side,” the man told WCVB. “Next thing I know, he jumped in the car.”

The car was found nearby on Border Street, where the bag that had the $240,000 was found empty, the report said.

Police described the two men as white or white Hispanic men wearing dark clothes and caps. Anyone with any information is asked to call detectives at 617-343-4220.
