A neglected dog had fur so matted she could barely move — then came good news.

Cinnamon the dog got a much-needed haircut, allowing her personality to shine through. But her lucky streak didn’t end there. A North Carolina shelter also shared the heartwarming update that she has been adopted into a new family.

“They came and did a meet and greet and Cinnamon fell in love,” Friends for Animals-Humane Society of Burke County wrote May 22 on Facebook. “She was so excited and they fell in love with her too! So we have a wonderful ending to this story and we couldn’t be happier!”

Cinnamon, believed to be about 1 year old, got a second chance after she reportedly was neglected and tied up outside. When she was surrendered May 13, she had an “excess amount of fur” that left her in pain, according to a past social media post and a phone interview with shelter executive director Chastity Chapman.

“Pretty much her whole body was encased” in matting that was a couple of inches thick, making it difficult for her to turn around, assistant director Patsy Smith said in the interview.

Cinnamon’s heartbreaking condition led the humane society to share a desperate online plea for help with getting her a free haircut. Dozens of social media users chimed in, leaving the shelter “overwhelmed.”

The shelter turned to All The Dogs Grooming & Training, which shared dramatic photos of the pup’s transformation.

“I’ve been grooming for many years and this is the worst I’ve ever seen,” the Morganton business wrote May 15 on Facebook. “Her back end and legs were all completely encased. It’s took me 2.5 hours to free her from her own fur tomb.”

Then Cinnamon returned to the shelter, where she started “shining.” The doodle — a poodle mix — was seen running around and learning she could finally reach her tail.

“She didn’t know what toys were, but it did not take her (long),” Smith said.

After a few days of wooing shelter workers, the humane society shared the touching news that Cinnamon got new owners. Now, she reportedly has the “perfect home” with kids and a canine brother.

“This post is so bittersweet as we all fell in love with this beautiful sweet girl,” according to the shelter in Morganton, a roughly 75-mile drive northwest from Charlotte.
