Barrington School District 220 officials confirmed that the pedestrian struck Thursday morning by a rush hour Metra commuter train was a student at Barrington High School.

According to published reports, the incident happened around 8 a.m. as the train, on the Metra Union Pacific Northwest Line, passed through the northwest suburb.

“This morning the student was walking to school when the student was accidentally struck by a train on Route 59 and Main Street. The student’s family has been notified and is receiving support,” SD220 Superintendent Craig Winkelman wrote in a message to district families.

As of late-morning, the student had not been publicly identified by authorities. The school district did not provide additional information, including the student’s grade level.

“Please know we are doing everything we can to help the BHS community cope with the student’s passing,” Winkelman wrote.

He said counselors would be made available to SD220 students who may need support. Also, Winkelman said, the district is working with the Barrington Police Department as needed.

“Our thoughts go out to the student’s family during this very difficult time,” he said.
