A Palatine man has been charged with drunken driving in connection to an accident in which a popular Wauconda teacher was killed, according to Wheeling police.

Police said they have charged Guillermo Salgado, 28, with aggravated driving under the influence and reckless homicide in the crash that killed Robert Gillen.

Salgado appeared in Cook County court Dec. 28 in Rolling Meadows, where he was released on electronic home monitoring and ordered to home confinement.

Salgado’s blood-alcohol level was over the legal limit of .08 when he crashed into Gillen’s car in the early morning hours of Dec. 10, according to police.

Authorities said Salgado was headed east when he entered the westbound lanes of traffic on Palatine Road at the Wheeling Road intersection. He continued east in the wrong lane until he crashed into Gillen’s car, fatally injuring Guillen.

Passengers in both vehicles suffered minor injuries, police said.

Gillen, 53, was a longtime math teacher at Wauconda High School and he also served as an athletic trainer.
