Colorado Sports Betting

The people of Colorado played their part in legalizing sports betting in November 2019.  Due to Colorado’s Taxpayer Bill of Rights, voter approval was required to pass the legislation. The sports-loving folks of the Centennial state spoke in favor.

Following this, legal online sports betting went live in Colorado in May 2020. Colorado sports betting law states that each of the state’s 33 casinos can offer online betting inside state lines, via authorized sportsbooks.

Early in 2022, Colorado sports bettors are blessed with a fantastic choice of 26 licensed sportsbooks. These can be accessed in person at casinos, other licensed premises, or via online sites and mobile betting apps

There’s more betting choice in the Centennial State than almost anywhere in the US.

Latest Colorado Sports Betting News

The latter part of the football season saw some nig numbers generated in Colorado once more. The Centennial State’s sportsbooks took $461.4 million in bets for $24.7 million in revenue over December 2021. That pushed the total handle since sportsbooks were launched in May 2020 to more than $5 billion.

Meanwhile, the increase in casino table limits at Colorado casinos could well have a positive impact on the state’s sports bettors.

Following this hike, gambling revenue grew 42% state-wide from July through November in 2021 compared to the same period in 2020. This has to be considered a great outcome for sports bettors who tend to gravitate to table games over slots.

A new law has recently been signed to help Colorado shut down ‘gray casinos’. These casinos have been operating in malls, with slot machines and other games, with winners receiving cryptocurrency and other means of payment.

In Colorado, casinos can only operate in Blackhawk, Cripple Creek and Central City — the towns approved by voters for legal gambling. It is expected that these gray casinos will be shut down, and move towards a safer gambling environment in Colorado.

The history of Colorado Sports Betting

Colorado began its push to legalize sports betting in 2019 with a bill that narrowly passed through the Colorado General Assembly. Due to Colorado’s Taxpayer Bill of Rights, the question of sports betting then had to be pushed over to voters before it could become law.

Colorado decided to allow the state’s casinos to offer online and retail sports betting in that referendum in November of 2019.

Online sportsbooks then went live in May 2020, with retail sports betting slow to get going owing to the restrictions imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Then in 2021 sports betting expanded quickly. The number of active sportsbooks nearly doubled in that first full year of legalized sports betting. Early in 2022, there are 26 sportsbooks doing business in Colorado.

Colorado Sports Teams to bet on

Colorado is a very proud sports state with a well-known raft of professional and collegiate teams representing at the top level.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos’ famous orange is among the most instantly recognizable uniforms in the NFL. Over the years the Denver-based franchise has seen many great players and teams pull it on and do the state of Colorado proud.

Whether that means the running prowess of yard-eating-machine Terrell Davis, who finally helped lift the Super Bowl hoodoo not once but twice in 1997 and 1998 or, the coolness in arrow-like accuracy of a veteran Peyton Manning late in his career, the Broncos have always represented in the AFC.

Famously unlucky coach Dan Reeves deserves a mention for his great side of the late 80s, who despite making the championship decider three times in four seasons, never lifted the Vince Lombardi trophy.

Unfortunately for the Broncos faithful, the rebuilding process since the 2015 triumph is still a work in progress.

Denver Nuggets

In the shape of Nikola Jokic, the Nuggets have a true star in their midst.  The towering Serbian center is someone they’ve really built a team around and more importantly has got them sniffing around the latter stages of the post-season consistently in recent seasons.

As they have done twice before, it was the LA Lakers that stopped the Nuggets from reaching the NBA finals for the first time in their history at the back end of the 2019/20 season.

The Western Conference has so far proved too tough a nut to crack, but the latter years at the Ball Arena under coach Michael Malone have got Nuggets fans dreaming of something big.

Colorado Rockies

Still a relatively new franchise in MLB terms, the Rockies were only started competing in 1993 and made the playoffs just two seasons later.

The Coors Field outfit and Rockies fans alike have had to remain patient where success is concerned since.

They did manage to secure their only league pennant when winning the 2007 National League Championship Series, albeit the World Series that followed was a quite brutal reminder of the gap to the MLB’s historic elite.

The Red Sox ran out 4-0 winners to take the world title back to Boston. Nevertheless, both the 2017 and 2018 campaigns saw the Rockies back in the post-season via wild cards.

Colorado Avalanche

As far as franchise relocations go, the Quebec Nordics’ arrival in Denver couldn’t have gone more smoothly on the rink at least.

The first campaign in 1995/96 yielded an emphatic Stanley Cup win following a clean sweep of the Florida Panthers. That set a precedent for divisional supremacy and another national championship in 2001/2.

Denver hockey fans were in dreamland. The Avalanche went on to set the league record for most consecutive division titles at nine in a row from 1995 to 2003 (one in Quebec, and the rest in Colorado), and qualified for the playoffs in each of their first ten seasons after relocation.

That streak finally ended in 2007, though the Avs have been no strangers to playoff hockey since, especially under Jared Bednar.

Colorado Rapids

The Rapids have put soccer on the Colorado map despite playing out of Commerce City, rather than Denver or Colorado Springs.

Their 2010 MLS Cup victory remains the only major trophy in the cabinet, but if you’re only going to have one, then at least make it the most coveted.

One man whom Rapids fans idolize is their former striker and all-time leading goal scorer Conor Casey. The American was instrumental in that winning campaign and has even come back in short stints to coach the team on an interim basis.

The good times could be rolling again down at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Park as well after the Rapids finished up Western Conference champions in 2021.
