Legendary French fashion designer Thierry Mugler has died at the age of 73.

The news was confirmed on the designer’s official Instagram account, which captioned a black and white image of Mugler: “It is with deep sadness that the House of Mugler announces the passing of Mr Manfred Thierry Mugler. A visionary whose imagination as a couturier, perfumer and image-maker empowered people around the world to be bolder and dream bigger every day.”

His theatrical, groundbreaking designs were primarily inspired by 1940s and 1950s glamour and the silhouettes of those decades, often being instantly recognizable as his work thanks to exaggerated shoulders and hips, constricted waists and sculptural, futuristic bodices.

Many of the most famous, trend-setting faces were seen wearing Mugler’s designs, from David Bowie to Diana Ross, George Michael to Rihanna, Béyonce to Kim Kardashian.

In 2019, Mugler returned to fashion design after a 20-year hiatus, to create the “wet dress” that Kim Kardashian wore to the Met Gala. The look, which had the illusion of being covered in hundreds of glistening water droplets, took eight months to create.

Born Manfred Thierry Mugler in 1948 in Strasbourg, France, he started his creative career not in design, but in the world of dance.

By the age of 14, Mugler was a talented performer and was a dancer with the Ballet du Rhin, an opera company in France.

Although he was very talented in this field, he always had an interest in making his own clothes and opened his first boutique in Paris during the 1970s, according to the BBC.

Mugler wasn’t just known in the world of fashion, but beauty too, as his brand become known for popular fragrances ‘Angel’ and ‘Alien.’

The fashion world and beyond pay tribute to the legendary designer’s legacy and career.
