After the third season of Emily in Paris, costume designer Marylin Fitoussi teased to ELLE.com that it might finally be time for Lily Collins’ Emily Cooper to “embrace, a little bit, the French culture”—in her wardrobe as well as her personal life. “This young American girl is saying, ‘Oh, the high-waisted trousers with the wide legs…[can] I take it and do it in my own style?’” Now, with the fourth season rolling out over two parts on Netflix, Fitoussi’s vision is coming into focus.
In season 4, Emily still struts through the City of Light in neon colors and dangerously high heels, but she also opts for trousers and button-downs and blazers that speak to a more “mature” French sensibility. “She’s much more in control, maybe much more powerful,” Fitoussi recently told Fashionista. “I think what will define the new season is this masculine-feminine twist that we never had before.”
That new aesthetic, while not necessarily toned-down, suits an older, more confident Emily. And it falls neatly in line with this year’s fashion trends: corporate-core, gender-neutral, and academia-influenced styles all pop up in Em’s reinvented wardrobe. Now, don’t expect Emily to start wearing all-black thanks to Parisian peer pressure. Perhaps nothing better defines Fitoussi’s creations than full-tilt color, and Collins’ season 4 wardrobe is no different.
One of Em’s early looks is this highlighter-yellow ensemble, featuring a Possery leather shirt worn over a Joli Closet frilly blouse and an Isabel Marant corduroy mini skirt. Never one to eschew accessories, Emily gets a Silvia Tcherassi bag and her diamond-initial necklace to tie everything together. But perhaps my favorite detail of this look is the gold-chain ponytail cuff keeping Emily’s hair in place. Accessories brand Lelet NY has recently made quite a splash with these hair pieces: You can expect them to only become more popular after their Emily in Paris cameo.
Look 2
I go weak for a good suit. While tracking down a runaway Camille early in season 4, Emily sports this cobalt-blue set with a Pierre Hardy bag—a sign that, as Collins recently told Harper’s BAZAAR UK, Emily is “literally wearing the pants now.”
Look 3
Emily’s never been afraid to wear shorts to the office. She marches into her luxury marketing agency this season in a pair of green leather Manokhi shorts, paired with a scarab-print blouse from La DoubleJ. You can swap out the shorts for a skirt if you want something a little more workwear-appropriate, then finish off your version of the outfit with gold earrings and stacking rings.
Look 4
Emily’s beloved newsboy cap makes another appearance in season 4, alongside her massive Isabel Marant teddy coat and over-the-knee Christian Louboutin boots. Hey, at least we know she’s warm!
Look 5
One of my personal favorite looks of season 4 makes only a quick cameo in a café scene, during which Emily meets with two colleagues in a purple striped Sébline button-up and Miu Miu patterned vest, accessorized with a matching tie, diamond tie clip, and silver rings. The outfit is a perfect encapsulation of Emily’s elevated-but-playful aesthetic, fusing classic tailoring with geometric shapes and eye-catching color.
Look 6
Another typical Emily office look: a baby-pink Jacquemus cardigan with a Philosophy Di Lorenzo Serafini romper and Kate Spade tote. As Fitoussi recently put it to Forbes: “Many people say to me, ‘Emily cannot afford what she has in her closet.’ And I say, ‘Of course not, nobody can!’ But do you want to see her in a hoodie and jeans? Nobody wants to see that. It’s for the imagination to see these beautiful items created by brilliant people.”
Look 7
A second tie sighting! This one comes adorned with black-and-white florals, creating a pleasant pattern-clash with Emily’s windowpane-printed button-up underneath. Fitoussi finessed the look with a scarlet leather coat and fur-accented shoulder bag from Ozias.
Look 8
When trying to woo Alfie to perform a campaign-essential kiss in season 4, Emily slips into a striped Tara Jarmon suit set with a matching Panama hat from Lastelier. The Tara Jarmon jacket and pants are no longer available, but you can re-create your own (more casual) version with a striped set from RHODE and a Cuyana Ecuador hat.
Look 9
Once Emily flees Paris for Rome in season 4 part 2, she starts dressing with a bit of what Collins calls “old Italian glamour,” she told Netflix. Emily’s version of that includes this checkered blazer and drop-waist skirt, paired with Dior sunglasses and a Saint Laurent bag—just in case you forgot who you’re dealing with. But perhaps the most shocking twist to this look is Emily’s practical Mary Jane flats. In previous seasons, Em’s almost constantly in a pair of ankle-breaking heels. It’s nice to see her give her feet a break.
Look 10
In an interview with Netflix, Collins says the looks for season 4 part 2 were “very much inspired by [the film] Roman Holiday.” Thus: Audrey Hepburn-esque scarves, neck ties, and polka dots. Exploring Rome with new love interest Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini), Emily sports a polka-dot blouse from Vivienne Westwood, paired with a Vivienne Westwood denim jacket, shorts, and Christian Louboutin penny loafers. You know, casual sightseeing attire.
Look 11
This burgundy get-up is perhaps one of Emily’s most easy-to-recreate ensembles, and it’s perfect as the autumn weather sets in. Combining a leather jacket with a turtleneck and checkered miniskirt—and matching lipstick—Em looks as cool and casual as she gets.
