The Peabody Awards made its long-overdue Los Angeles debut at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Sunday.
Hosted by Kumail Nanjiani, the 84th annual awards ceremony recognized Mel Brooks, Quinta Brunson, Star Trek and more storytellers for its first time on the West Coast since it launched in 1940.
Brooks received the Career Achievement Award for breaking “ground through his use of comedy as a form of resistance” throughout his storied career, according to Peabody.
Brunson was honored with the Trailblazer Award for shining “a light on the challenges faced by public school teachers” through her ABC series Abbott Elementary, as well as opening “doors for the next generation of Black leaders in television.”
The Institutional Award went to Star Trek for the TV franchise’s “enduring dedication to storytelling that projects the best of humanity into the distant future” nearly 60 years after it first debuted.
Unanimously voted on by 32 jurors from 1,100 entries, other recipients included The Bear, Fellow Travelers, The Last of Us, Jury Duty, Reality, Somebody Somewhere, Reservation Dogs, Bluey, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and 20 Days in Mariupol.
In addition to being the first time in Los Angeles, Sunday’s awards show was also the first in-person ceremony since the annual event went virtual starting in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic and was cancelled last year during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
