Belfast

Belfast won for Acting Ensemble, and the Focus Features pic’s Jude Hill also picked up the CCA for Young Actor/Actress. In accepting the cast prize, star Jamie Dornan said: “As someone from Belfast, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of telling a story about a place people don’t have a really big idea about it. … without a politicized or military lens, seeing it through the eyes of family — something we can all relate to in Ukraine, families going through this hardship.”

Troy Kutser won the night’s first film award, Supporting Actor for Apple’s CODA, and Ariana DeBose then took Supporting Actress for West Side Story. Both of them also won BAFTA Awards today.

Overall, The Power of the Dog and Ted Lasso led all films and TV shows with four wins each, and Belfast, Dune and Succession were next with three apiece. West Side Story, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, No Time to Die, Mare of Easttown, Squid Game and The White Lotus were the night’s only other double winners.

As for networks and distributors, HBO edged Netflix with nine trophies (not counting one for HBO Max) to the streamer’s eight. Warner Bros was next with six, and Apple TV+ got four. Focus Features took three, and Searchlight and MGM/UAR got two apiece.

On the TV front, HBO’s Succession followed its Emmy triumph with a Best Drama Series win after its Sarah Snook and Kieran Culkin took the respective Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor awards.

Make this stop, please.”

2022 Awards Season Calendar – Dates For The Oscars, SAG, BAFTAs & More

There were a couple of surprising winners for lead acting in a drama series: Lee Jung-jae won for Netflix’s streaming juggernaut Squid Game and Melanie Linsky for Showtime’s Yellowjackets.

HBO’s Mare of Easttown scored the Limited Series trophy, and Kate Winslet took Best Actress in a Limited Series. She wasn’t on hand for the ceremony.

Michael Keaton took home Best Actor in a Limited Series for Hulu’s Dopesick. “The only thing I say about things in the world, I’m going to say thank you to fellow actor President Zelensky and keep up the fight. There’s only one way to change things, environmental, socially, racial justice and social justice — two words: voting rights. Voting rights and voter suppression.”

The White Lotus’ Murray Bartlett and Jennifer Coolidge won the night’s first two awards — Supporting Actor and Actress in a Limited Series — for the HBO show

Taye Diggs and Nicole Byer are hosting the intercontinental ceremony from the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel, while stars in London will gather at the Savoy Hotel for a late-night soiree that is expected be an integral part of the telecast.

Bruised producer-director-star Halle Berry received the SeeHer Award from Issa Rae tonight. “I knew exactly the power of this story because I said if you had a hard time, if it made you uncomfortable watching that story, imagine being that woman living that story,” the Monster’s Ball OScar winner said. “We true need to see each other’s reality no matter how uncomfortable it makes us so that we might stop judging and stop pointing figures, but rather find compassion and empathy for others.”

Billy Crystal received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Jimmy Kimmel tonight. “The first laughs I ever got in my life is the fuel my engine is still burning today,” he said. “I dedicate this award to those amazing people in our living room in Long Beach, Long Island.”

The six-time Emmy winner also talked about foreign affairs, saying, “I pray that somehow someway there can be laughter and joy in that part of the world again.”

The 2021 Critics Choice Awards generally aren’t considered a barometer of potential Oscar fortunes, with its more populist tendencies, but Nomadland took the top film award last year and went on to score the Academy Award for Best Picture.
