CHICAGO — After one season, the Chicago Sky have fired head coach Teresa Weatherspoon, multiple sources told the Chicago Sun-Times’ Annie Costabile.

The Sky went 13-27 and finished sixth in the WNBA’s Eastern Conference this year, but underperformed down the stretch.

After a win against the Los Angeles Sparks on Aug. 17, the Sky were 11-15 and held the No. 8 seed in the WNBA Playoff picture, sitting just a half-game behind the No. 7 seed at the time, the Indiana Fever (12-15).

But Chicago went 2-12 over their final 14 games, falling out of the WNBA playoff picture amid struggles to shoot, and injuries to key players like prominent rookie forward Angel Reese.

With previous head coach and general manager James Wade’s departed from the team, Weatherspoon was hired on Oct. 12, 2023, and came to Chicago after being an assistant for the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans over the three seasons prior, having joined them in 2019 as a two-way player development coach.

From 2008 through 2014, Weatherspoon coached at her alma mater, Louisiana Tech, where she was their head coach for all but her first season with the team.

A highly successful player in college and a national champion in 1988, Weatherspoon was one of the WNBA’s first stars when the league began play in 2007.

Over eight seasons with the New York Liberty and Los Angeles Sparks, Weatherspoon played in 254 games and was a five-time All-Star, which included winning back-to-back WNBA Defensive Player of the Year awards during the first two years of the league.
