Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted, the New York Times reports.

The charge or charges against the mayor remain unclear. The indictment remains unsealed, according to the Times.

The development concludes months of speculation over a federal corruption investigation that has loomed over the mayor since FBI agents seized his digital devices and searched his aides’ homes last year.

A spokesperson for the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York did not immediately return a request for comment. Federal law enforcement officials declined to comment.

Adams may now become the first mayor in New York City history to be charged with a crime while in office.

Brendan McGuire, a lawyer for Adams, did not respond to a request for comment.
