Are you on a Connections winning streak? Or perhaps you’re new to the game? Regardless, Newsweek has some helpful hints for you to work out Tuesday’s puzzle.

The brainteaser was launched by The New York Times in 2023 and has since gone on to become the newspaper’s second-most played game behind Wordle, another word-based puzzle.

In an interview with Newsweek in June, Connections developer and NYT crossword editor Wyna Liu shared that each Connections board “has to be made from scratch.”

“I usually don’t know where a board is going to go,” she said. “It really does take a long time to fudge things and try different angles.”

The answers for Tuesday’s Connections puzzle will be revealed at the bottom of this article, so please scroll with caution if you don’t want to see spoilers.

How to Play ‘Connections’

It doesn’t take long to learn the rules of the game. To start, players are given a 16-word table. These words must be broken up into four groups of four based on a common theme.

There are varying levels of difficulty linked to these categories, with yellow being the easiest and purple the hardest. The green and blue categories are medium difficulty.

For example, in Monday’s puzzle, one of the categories was “Not smooth, as terrain,” and the words associated with that category were “bumpy,” “rough,” “rugged” and “uneven.” This was a yellow category.

If the answers are correct, the words will flash in their category color and be removed from the board. If they are incorrect, however, they will be gray in color and remain on the board. Players are given four chances to make a mistake before the answers are revealed. There is no time limit to the game.

If you’re feeling particularly stuck, clicking the “Shuffle” button may just give your brain the refresh it needs to answer correctly.
