An 81-year-old man is facing additional criminal charges following a second death from a boat trailer crash that happened last month on Cape Cod, officials say.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the boat trailer on Aug. 30, identified as Peter Richmond of Yarmouth Port, is now charged with a second count of motor vehicular homicide by negligent operation, according to a statement from the Yarmouth Police Department. The crash occurred on North Main Street in Yarmouth, south of the Great Western Road intersection.

John Hughan, 14, of Norwell, died in the crash, and two others were taken to Cape Cod Hospital, police said initially. 

“As his life was taken far too soon, he will be remembered for how hard he worked at everything he did, the love and kindness that emanated through him, and his compassion for his friends and family,” Hughan’s obituary says.

Cornelius Allen Bottomley, 54, of Hanover, died on Sept. 13 from injuries sustained in the crash that took the life of his nephew, Hughan, police said in the updated statement.

The two were working on the boat trailer that became disabled by a broken axle when Richmond’s vehicle hit it from behind, police said.

“The Yarmouth Police Department extends their condolences and deepest sympathy to the families who have been impacted by this tragic incident,” the statement said.
