LIBERTY HILL, Texas (KXAN) — Liberty Hill wants to trade in some of its car traffic for foot traffic. The city recently unveiled a master plan for downtown to get more people to visit.

“It used to be Loop 332. We changed it to Main Street last year because we just want it to feel like more of a historical downtown,” the city’s Director of Communications, Katie Amsler, said.

The city has nearly tripled in size over the last four years. The latest census data from 2023 shows more than 10,000 people call Liberty Hill home.

“With the Williamson County bypass that’s going in, we’re hoping we can not have those construction vehicles on Main Street and just kind of slow it down, and make it a slower pace,” Amsler said.

A huge part of that comes with trying to get more, and new, businesses to consider downtown. And a lot more people. Earlier this summer, city council approved a new downtown master plan after extensive public input.

“People really want to keep the historical feel,” Amsler explained. “We have tons of history down here. That’s really important to our culture and to our residents.”

The plan will serve as a guide for the city as it looks at new ways to try and reinvent itself.

“We want it to be more walkable. Our hope is to expand the sidewalks and add landscaping,” Amsler said.

In total, there are more than four dozen areas for improvement and strategy the city will consider. One of the largest is infrastructure.

“One step at a time. Baby steps to get to where we want to be” Amsler said.

Some of the proposed changes will be immediate, while others will take more time. Amsler said one of the first things the city plans to tackle is adding new historic light posts and benches around downtown.
